Hanukkah 2009

09 December 2009

Last Saturday we celebrated Hanukkah with the extended Janis Family. We ate our traditional family dinner of latkes (potato pancakes) with applesauce and sour cream, pot roast and sauerkraut, rolls, and a menorah jello mold. After dinner, Grandpa retold the story of Hanukkah, after which Grandma and Aunt Allaire lit the menorah candles, and then we all opened our presents. Last year we got powdered laundry detergent (Grandma is usually very practical with her gifts, and we love her for it!), but this year we got a pretty decorative Star of David to hang on our front door. Mason enjoyed his present too, he got a wooden Hanukkah puzzle.

Here's our little quarter Jew boy with a Yamaka on his head.

He wasn't too pleased when Daddy put the Star of David on his head.

The Official Birthday Post

08 December 2009

Last Friday was my 24th Birthday! After being awoken to a smothering of kisses from my husband and babe, Craig kicked me out of the house so he could prepare for my birthday surprise. I usually go to an exercise group anyway on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, but I had been lazy all week and was unhappy about having to go... hence, why I had to be "kicked" out of the house. When my exercise group was over I got a voicemail from Craig saying that I still wasn't allowed to come home, so I drove around for about an half an hour before I came home. I was a little more than annoyed at this point, but Craig had reassured me that my birthday present would not be as cool if it didn't have that "surprise" factor. He was right. When I walked through the front door I was greeted by a room full of red and ivory balloons, each with an index card tied to the end. Craig was sitting on the couch, still filling balloons with a helium tank he had rented from a local party store. He was disappointed that he wasn't able to finish it all before I got back, but I didn't mind. There were still a TON of balloons. As he finished up I began to read the cards. Each one was a message from a family member, or mutual friend, about why they love me. It was fun to read the comments, and many of them brought tears of joy to my eyes. I had recently been going through a rough time, and it was wonderful to hear all the wonderful comments, and words of encouragement that people so willingly had shared. It meant so much. After I read the bazillion notes, cried, and cuddled with my hubby, Craig made me breakfast. He had planned a meal of homemade coffee cake, yogurt, and orange juice.

Craig had planned for us to go to the Museum of Art up on campus, and then go to Color Me Mine to use an old gift certificate that he had purchased for me on Mother's day, but plans fell through. Craig had hoped that his brothers would be able to come help him get everything ready for my birthday surprise, but unfortunately they were unable to make it, and he had to do it all himself. So it took a little longer than he had hoped to get everything done, and make breakfast. To compensate for cancelled plans, I asked Craig if we could go outside and do a little photo shoot of me and my balloons. Craig has been dabbling in a little photography lately, so he was more than willing. I'm very pleased with the results. You can see some of the pictures HERE and HERE.

Later in the evening we met up with Derek and Ethan and headed to Sushi Ya for my birthday dinner. I absolutely love sushi, and since we have been on a tight budget, I have missed it like crazy. After we gorged ourselves on yummy all-you-can-eat sushi, Craig and I said goodbye to Derek and Ethan, and headed up to Sandy for the Festival of Trees. We have made a tradition of going each year with our friends, Autumn and Jeremy. It was super crowded this year, and when we got there, we realized that we had forgotten to bring a cell phone. So after a few minutes of wandering around, we decided to page them over the intercom. While Craig was waiting in line he overheard the lady saying that they will only make an announcement over the intercom if you are missing a child, so when Craig got to the front of the line he said that he needed to page our friends because we couldn't find them, and we had THEIR baby! Once we found them, we wandered around for a little bit, chatted, at yummy scones, and then headed home.

It was a wonderful way to end a wonderful day!

Haircut

02 December 2009

Today I gave Mason a haircut. It was his second time ever getting his hair cut, but the first time I took him to a kid hair salon to have it done. I was a little nervous about doing it myself, but it needed to be done. So, I watched a couple of youtube videos to get an idea of how to do it, and then I went for it. I had Mason sit in his highchair with a homemade smock (garbage bag with holes cut out for his head and arms), turned on The Incredibles on my laptop for some entertainment, and gave him a gingerbread man cookie, completely with frosting and M&M's, to snack on. He was content and sat still the entire time. I was impressed at how well the whole experience went, and I'm actually pleased with the outcome of the cut.  Here are a few pictures...

16 Months

16 November 2009

Dear Mason,

Today you turn 16 months old. You are getting so big, and this past month has made your Daddy and I fall hopelessly in love with you! You are such the sweetest little thing and we love your enthusiasm for life.

Now for some of the fun milestones from this past month...

-You love to give kisses. You've even started to pucker up your lips and make a smacking noise. It's the cutest thing, and much more rewarding than when you use to just lean in and let us kiss you. You even give kisses to your stuffed animals and other toys.

-You love to cuddle and give hugs. You're especially good at bear hugs and how you reach your arms way out so that you can grip one hand on each arm.

-Uncle Derek taught you how to give "noggins" just like from the movie Finding Nemo. All we have to do is say "noggin'" and you lean in a gently tap your head against ours. I think your Daddy and I enjoy receiving "noggins" more than we enjoy getting hugs and kisses from you sometimes.

-You like to walk around in your Mommy and Daddy's shoes. It's pretty hilarious, especially when you've got on Daddy's shoes.

-You've gotten very communicative with your gestures and glances. Even though you still don't talk much, you are very clear about what you want and that makes things both easier and more difficult.

-You now have a total of 12 teeth- the 4 top and 4 bottom front teeth, and two molars (top and bottom) on both sides. It makes eating so much easier and enjoyable for you, and you are finally back to eating pretty much everything. We still struggle on occasion, but overall your diet is much more balanced.

-You recently discovered gingersnaps, and they make you very happy!

-You are still so easy going. This past month you have gone on 3 photo shoots with Mommy and you have been so well behaved. As long as you have your snacks with you, you are content to sit in your stroller for several hours while Mommy works. Thank you so much!

-Daddy is proud that you have learned how to force burps (mommy's not so happy about this and would appreciate it if we didn't encourage this new "talent"). Anyway, it all happened in church. Our neighbors baby burped and spit up a little, and immediately after, you tried imitating the burp and let out a big belch. Daddy was so proud.

-This past month, much to your mother's dismay, you learned how to open the screen on the front of the fireplace. You enjoy hiding your toys in there and playing in the soot. Mommy hopes this fascination doesn't last for very long.

-You LOVE putting things in the laundry baskets. If Mommy and Daddy are ever missing shoes, or other items, it's wise to look in the laundry baskets...because sure enough, there they will all be!

-You still say Mama, Dada, and hi, but recently we have noticed an excess usage of "uh-oh," "whoa," and "yeah." You use them all at the appropriate time, and sometimes you just say them to say them. I'm not sure if we can really count them as words, but you do say them an awful lot so I thought I would include them.

-You LOVE stuffed animals. You always sleep with at least one of your furry animals under arm, and you can often be seen playing with them around the house. One morning we woke up to you laughing and giggling in your crib, only to realize that you were playing make-believe with your new white teddy bear. Great Grandma Janis even just recently gave you another stuffed teddy bear because you enjoyed playing with it so much while you were over at her house.

To say the least, this month was a refreshing break from the couple of difficult months that we had with you. As you learn to more appropriately communicate your wants and needs, it becomes easier and easier to deal with your growing curiosity. We love you so much Mason, and we are indeed grateful to know that you love us too.

Love,

Mommy and Daddy
